Maris is someone that always had a gentle smile on his face. He had a way of easily making conversation. I think of the time I saw him in the yard playing with his grandson with little dump trucks and diggers. Both were in their happy place…. Spending time with each other. We easily spent an extended amount of time chatting that day. Most recently my family and I ran into Maris while out shopping and his smile and greeting left us with a smile on all of our faces. He had a way of making you feel welcome and listened to. You will be missed Maris. Praising Jesus for making a way for us to spend eternity with Him in Heaven.

Dear Larisa and family,
We were so very sorry to hear about the loss of Maris. He was such a wonderful man, always smiling and laughing and spreading his positive energy. We have great memories of sharing times with you and Maris and the U of T friends and their families. It was so wonderful to connect with you both on the zoom call with all of us a few years ago. Maris was so proud of his family and I’m sure you will all take comfort in your memories. Our thought and prayers are with you and your children and grandson.

I met and worked with Maris at Seneca. He was a force of nature, a bon vivant, a storyteller and a constant force of positivity. He was a staunch student advocate and educator. His students were so lucky to have him on their side and their success was his primary goal.
He will be so missed by those who knew and worked with him, colleagues and students alike.

Q: What will you miss most about Maris?
A: My name is Sandhya Y., and I am a student of ITBA (Fall 2024).
It is with heavy hearts that we remember Professor Maris Karklins, who unexpectedly passed away. He was a truly inspiring educator who touched the lives of many students, including myself. Professor Karklins had an extraordinary ability to make complex topics accessible and engaging, fostering a love for learning in all of us.
Beyond the classroom, he was a kind and compassionate mentor, always ready to offer guidance and support. The impact of his wisdom, kindness, and dedication will be felt for years to come, and his absence leaves a void that will be hard to fill.
We will always cherish the lessons learned and the memories made. Rest in peace, Professor Karklins. We will deeply miss his smile, his voice, and the way he taught with passion and purpose. His experiences and motivation will continue to inspire us, but no one can ever replace his presence in the classroom.
Missing you, Sir.

I had first met Maris at the Seneca open house over the summer. Maris was advocating on behalf of the accommodations and accessibility department. I am a student with multiple disabilities and school has always been a struggle for me. When I first started talking to Maris he understood my challenges and hardships so effortlessly, like no one has before. I talked to him for a while and it was like I knew him for the longest time, he was so great to get along with. After talking with Maris I knew that if I had joined Seneca that he would have my back. I knew that with Maris in my corner he would help make my college experience so much easier and successful than my high school experience. Maris was the reason I joined Seneca College.
Maris had a spirit like no other. He was very friendly and open hearted, he always put a smile on my face. Maris helped me with so much within the little time we had to get to know each other, he supported me with so much care and dedication. Our meetings were always the best, we always got off topic and we laughed about things all the time. He had a great sense of humor and was the best to be around, I always looked forward to our meetings.
I got the call informing me about his passing and I was devastated. I only knew him for a few months but his impact on me was so big that his loss felt so large. I remember calling my mom right after and barely able to get the words out because I was so upset, I never expected to feel so close and connected to someone who helped me in my educational life, but Maris was so uplifting and positive, it was hard not to feel connected to him.
The world needs more people like Maris. He deserved so many more years of life. He was the best, no one could ever replicate his spirit, he was very unique. I still cannot fathom that such an amazing person who had so such a great impact on so many people was taken so soon.
Maris, thank you for providing me with dedicated support, for always lightening the mood and making me laugh, and for showing me that I am more than my challenges and disabilities. I will miss you dearly, Maris.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Maris for close to 20 years. We have worked together at 5 different companies. Maris brought joy to our department and to his students. His super power was helping students, staff and anyone he met. He would talk of the love of his family and was so happy when he became a grandfather. It didn’t matter if you knew Maris for years or days, he was instantly your friend. He has touched so many lives at Seneca and particularly our department, he will be forever missed.

Q: How would you describe Maris to someone who had never met them?
A: I met Maris through my mom Gloria at Seneca, I also had him teach a program where I worked training quickbooks. Maris was one of the most amazing people I knew. His qualifications were astonishing and he knew his stuff. His love for his students and his passion to help people was contagious. He truly was an amazing man, a loving and caring person. He will be missed by so many but his love for his students even though they may not realize made a huge impact on so many people. I for one will miss him and Seneca will never be the same without him there. He had some much love for his work and his family it will not be the same. Most I will miss his cheerful voice and his amazing smile. For someone who never met Maris, you are very unfortunate and miss an opportunity to know someone so amazing. I send my love and prayers to his friends and family during such a hard time. May his passion live on in so many of us, and may be always do our best just as Maris encouraged us to do.

My condolences to Maris’ family in this time of loss. Maris was the embodiment of passion and commitment, not only in his professional role but in every aspect of his life. He was a true force of nature whose impact touched every corner of our community. I knew him as a lifelong learner who consistently sought ways to provide the best possible support to his students, always striving to empower those he worked with. His deep love for education was matched only by his genuine care for the people around him. Every morning, Maris greeted us with infectious enthusiasm; a warmth and energy that set the tone for the day. It was impossible not to feel uplifted in his presence, as his laughter and kindness radiated throughout every conversation.
Maris spoke often of his beloved family, sharing stories about his wife, children, and grandson with such love and pride. His devotion to them was evident in everything he did, and it was clear that his family was his heart. He cherished his role as a husband, father and grandfather, and his stories brought joy and laughter to all of us who heard them.
Beyond his work and his family, Maris was a true connector; someone who made you feel seen and heard. His gift of conversation, his ability to make everyone feel welcome, and his deep empathy were just a few of the qualities that made him such a cherished colleague and friend. Maris’s kindness and compassion will never be forgotten. His spirit of connection and his genuine care for others will remain a guiding light for all who had the privilege of knowing him. The memories of Maris’s laughter, wisdom, and unwavering support will continue to inspire us.
Maris, you will always be missed, but your love and dedication to those you served will never fade.

There are no words I can pull at the moment to describe how sad I am to know that I will never be able to see Maris smile again or to hear his kind voice again.
As a mother of a child who needs extra assistance, I will be eternally grateful for the positive impact Maris had on my child's educational life at Seneca. He was one of only a few people in my daughter's educational life that understood her challenges.
He was warm, patient and kind.
Maris was so very special and he has left us with so many wonderful memories. I will never forget how dedicated he was to helping my daughter. During our sessions, he had so many wonderful family stories that he shared with delighted expressions and a lit up face.
Maris, it was truly a blessing to have you in our lives and we miss you deeply.
Heartfelt condolences to the Karklins family. Sending healing prayers and comfort during this very sad time.

I met Maris this past summer as my daughter was transitioning to Seneca. He invited me into the appointments and we spent hours learning how to navigate assistive technology. Maris was patient and kind. When I joked I had a large family he asked how many children I had and we I told him we had 4 children he told me how he had 5. He spent as much time as he could with my daughter and had her come back weekly while it was his "quiet time" at work. He really showed he cared for students. What a huge loss to his work community. My deepest condolences to Maris' family.

I’m heartbroken that Maris recently passed away. I first met him at Seneca College in 2020, and over the years, he became so much more than an adaptive technologist. At the end of October, I had an appointment with him, and we spent hours discussing everything. He shared his incredible stories, each filled with wisdom, kindness, and a passion for helping others succeed.
Maris was always so generous with his knowledge, and he truly cared about each of his students. He showed me what it means to be determined and compassionate, reminding me of the difference we can make in the world. I’m so grateful for my time with him and his belief in me. His guidance will continue to inspire me every day.
Thank you, Maris, for everything. You will be deeply missed.

My deepest condolences to Maris' family on their loss. It is a loss though to many more as Maris had touched so many lives with his dedication, compassion, care, and above all his effort for everyone. It was and still is heartbreaking to have learned of his sudden passing as it was only days previous that I had spoken to him. As with so many of our interactions it was to try his best for one of his students but also sharing some humour between ourselves.
He will be greatly missed by so many which is the greatest testament to Maris I can think of as his impact was important to the lives to those who needed it most, but I have no doubt the biggest impact was those he loved most.
No words can ever truly be a comfort at a time like this but having known loss in my own life I always like to say cherish the memories. Those always brought me peace and smile even in the most difficult of times.
His legacy will be hard to match but I hope to always try to put forth the effort like he did.
Rest in Peace Maris

Maris had a personality like no other, no matter what issues came his way at work he dealt with it in such a compassionate and kind manner setting an example to all his colleagues. He had such patience in helping students and colleagues alike, with the greatest sense of humour par none!
Maris always had time to help a colleague even with multiple questions during busy times, tolerantly and repeatedly giving the explanations that were already asked in a previous semester. Maris demonstrated the patience of Job, time and time again. He had such tenacity and quiet wit which made us all laugh! I will always remember Maris for his fortitude, his sense of humor and his profound wisdom.
Even though Maris is leaving a big gap in the department, for the Karklins family the loss is profound. May you be comforted by your strong religious belief. I hope that Maris's memory and his wonderful anecdotes will help to ease your pain. "In Maris's end is his beginning,' as his work here on earth is done and his compassion is his legacy. Maris will be starting great things for you all!

I had the pleasure of knowing Maris since I first started at Seneca in 2016. He was immediately kind; there was no ‘getting to know each other’ phase. He immediately jumped into asking how I was and speaking about himself and his life. I could never converse with him for anything less than half an hour as he always had interesting things to share. He exuded a curious mind and an open heart. I’m not sure I ever saw him without a warm smile. He spoke lovingly of everyone he knew - from students, to coworkers and most especially his family. Maris was beloved in our department and I will miss him very much. I’m sending his family and loved ones an immense amount of care right now.

I'm so saddened by the passing of Maris Karklins. Beyond being an amazing Assistive Technologist to his students, Maris was just an incredible human being. Although I know Maris from a work capacity, talking to him never felt like work. I always felt heard and in all of our conversations over the last number of years, I have never once felt rushed. He cared deeply and helped his students reach their potential. We would talk about his motivations for life long learning and taking on new challenges such as becoming an AT. I would also learn from him through the many life experiences he shared such as operating a motel! He had a great sense of humor and the most positive of outlook on life. Maris, I will miss you and your smile. Thank you for everything. My condolences to Maris' family who he has always spoken very loving of. RIP my friend.
