David Douglas Curry MATHIESON

April 5, 1959 – September 10, 2023

It is with a heavy heart to announce that David (‘Dave’, ‘Matty’, ‘Poppy’) Douglas Curry Mathieson, 64, died September 10, 2023 at home in Brampton surrounded by his family after a two year courageous battle with cancer.

Survived by his children Scott Mathieson (Lisa Chilvers), Lisa Field (Kevin Field), and Ricky Mathieson; his brother Peter Mathieson (Andrea Mathieson); the mother of his children Laurie Trzop; his two grandchildren Lillian (‘Lilly’) Mathieson and Jack (‘Jackie Boy’) Field; and his nieces and nephews. Dave was predeceased by his father Norman (‘Norm’), mother Norma and sister Janet.

Dave was born on April 5, 1959 in Etobicoke, and moved to Dorval in 1964 where he grew up making many lifelong friends and enjoying quality time with his siblings, Peter and Janet. Later he moved to Brampton in 1983, where he built a family of his own. He was passionate about many things but at the top of his list were his family and friends; they were his world. He was an amazing Dad, grandfather (‘Poppy’), son, brother, and friend. He was loved by many and will always be remembered.

He loved sports, especially hockey, football and golf, and spent a lot of time watching the games with his family and friends. Dave had a great sense of humour and made all the people around him laugh with his sarcastic jokes. He loved to have people over to entertain and cook, and he was a master of the barbeque.

Dave was a natural athlete from the start. When he signed up for hockey at 7 years old, he discovered the sport that would become his life-long passion. Whatever team he played for, from the Dorval Jets to the John Abbott Islanders to the Brampton Men’s League, he always seemed to be the best skating defenceman on his team and was even named top defenceman multiple years in a row. This talent for skating came from hours he spent having fun playing hockey with his brother and their friends on the backyard rink built by his beloved parents, Norm and Norma. His record of success dates back to when he was instrumental in his team winning the B Championship at the world-famous Quebec PeeWee Tournament.

When he was away from the rink, he loved to play golf, ski, and relax by the pool. Being a natural athlete, he quickly became good at whatever sport he tried, except possibly golf where he had his battles, but he kept going.

He was a devoted worker throughout the years and had the opportunity to work with all his kids while they were growing up where his bond with them grew even stronger.

We would like to give a special thanks to Peter, Dave’s brother, for taking such wonderful care of him over the past two years. We are forever grateful.

His family is very saddened by this loss and invites you to join them in a celebration of life at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 15 (80 Mary Street, Brampton) on Saturday September 16, 2023 from 12:30-4:00pm.  Food and drinks will be served.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Dave’s memory.
