Obituary of Berva Doreen BUTTERY

Berva Doreen Buttery (nee Phillips)

Quilter extraordinaire, prolific knitter of “double mitts”, baker of butter tarts and her infamous Christmas cake (also known as “Berv’s Booze Bar”), Berva passed away suddenly on July 25^th, 2023. 

Predeceased by her husband Jack (2003) and granddaughter Jaclyn (1986), she is lovingly remembered by her 4 children Fran (Glen Konorowski), Jack, Billy (Carmel) and Mary (John Sandrelli).  She was a proud Grandma to 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren who are spread across this country and around the globe (Australia, Riviera Maya). 

Berva moved from an urban setting (Oakville) to a farm in the country with her family in the late 1960’s.  She embraced the rural lifestyle – growing a large garden, making pickles and jam – and quickly became the neighbour everyone liked to call “friend”.  Moving to a farm in the Orangeville area in the early 1970’s, she joined the Waldemar Women’s Institute – and then took up quilting. She was a founding member of the Dufferin Piecemaker’s Quilting Guild.  She moved from the farm to Grand Valley in the mid 1990's, and remained there until 2022 – when she moved to Montgomery Village in Orangeville.

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 2nd, 2023 from 11:00am – 1:00pm. Words of Remembrance will be at 11:30am. The Celebration of Life will be located at In Memoriam Funeral Services, 28 Main Street North Grand Valley, L9W 5S7.
