Obituary of James Miller

James (Jim) Delbert Miller was born in Glasgow Scotland on March 28, 1939 to Alice Burns and James Miller Sr and older sister Elizabeth (deceased). The Miller family owned a Butcher shop to which James worked through his youth making deliveries all through the winding roads of the Gairloch, in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland. James would recall many stories to his daughters about growing up in Scotland after World War II, comparing the luxuries of today’s youth to what was available then. If you know James, you knew his passion was for cars..FAST cars.. Specifically the Jaguar XK120. The love started as a young man in the Highlands to his last days in Canada. He would collect pictures from newspaper articles, car shows and magazines. A favourite pastime was to attend the classic car show auctions just to see the cars once again. As much as James loved Scotland, he had a bit of a rebellious streak and decided to travel at the age of 25, it was a coin toss between Australia and Canada. We won. In June 1964, James landed in Toronto, and he did not know a soul, not having the intention to stay forever here, just to see what opportunities may lie ahead. Each year, James celebrated his day of landing in Canada. Although his heart was in Scotland, his feet were firmly planted in Canada He kept busy in Canada making close friends namely Bill Burrows, who Dad fondly remembered was a door to door Vacuum salesman before entering the Metro Toronto Police Service. The friendship lasted decades until his dear friend bid farewell in 2010. In 1967 Dad met a beautiful young Catherine Dillon, and she was quite taken with this Handsome dashing dark haired (yes dark haired) gentleman. They Married in October 1968 and Dad was introduced to a loving warm Dillon family who embraced him with both arms. Dad spoke so fondly of the brothers he never had, and spoke so lovingly about his Mother in Law Dellas Dillon. James and Catherine introduced three girls into the world Julanne in 1969, Erin in 1971 and Lenore in 1973. Although the marriage with Catherine was not meant to be, the love from the Dillon Family never ceased. Dougie and Cecil were special friends to Jim and he frequently shared many memories of great times with these men. James was Self Employed from the day he stepped off the plane in 1964; he carried on the Miller tradition as a Butcher for many years. He also owned a catering company. James was a people person, and loved having blether about the old country with fellow countrymen in his travels. James became a grandfather in 1992 and was blessed six more times. "Granddad" had so much pride with his daughters and his grandchildren. Every time we got together, he insisted on pictures. He became frustrated when cell phones became popular because he said that people keep taking pictures, but he never sees them! In later years, Dad worked in Security and then eventually retired to his "wee" apartment in Caledon. He LOVED his wee place. James had his own walkout to a lovely garden and he made new friendships there. James also travelled to Bolton a few times a week to the Toby Jub to play a few friendly hands of poker. This brought him so much happiness. James was at his happiest surrounded by his girls and their children, photos from the past 45 years adorned his apartment. He appreciated the little things in life, a phone call, a hot toddy, some "sweeties" and memories of days gone by. He will be missed by his girls, his grandchildren and his friends. We Love you Dad.
