I'm sorry this is so late, but I learned of Mr. Brice's passing a few months ago, and have been debating whether to post anything here since then. I decided it was important to talk about what Mr. Brice meant to me.
Mr. Brice was my grade 8 homeroom teacher, and was a hugely influential teacher and mentor to me. He introduced me to books and music and ideas I would have never found on my own. He encouraged my writing and journalism. He even came to my Coming Of Age Ceremony at the Unitarian Universalist congregation I attended as a young teen. I was a bit of a misfit and I got the sense that he was a little unusual too, and I think we got along well because of that. Mr. Brice was always in the role of a mentor for me, but that didn't stop him from taking me seriously, or treating me with compassion, or encouraging my interests, even though they were unusual... or mildly seditious; I published an underground newspaper at our middle-school, something Mr. Brice was not-so-secretly very supportive of. Mr. Brice was the best kind of teacher; someone who is excited by young people, and their enthusiasm, and enjoys introducing them to new things. Teachers like Mr. Brice don't come along often, and I think the world has lost a really unusual, hugely important human being.
Mr. Brice enjoyed reading aloud to our class when he was my teacher, something I remember fondly. He had a particular enthusiasm for the works of Richard Bach, who seemed to be one of his favourite authors. There's a quote in Illusions I think he would appreciate:
"Don't be dismayed at good-byes. A farewell is necessary before you can meet again. And meeting again, after moments or lifetimes, is certain for those who are friends."

I just came from the service for Jack. It was so nice to hear about his life from family and friends. As it was said many time this afternoon he was larger than life figuirtivly and literally. Jack I will miss your big splash into the pool and the big bear hug when you left for the day.

My sincerest condolences to all of Jack' s family and friends. We were classmates throughout public school and much of high school. We were cub, scout and adventurer members in our early days. Many great times and memories were created when in his presence. Time has passed much too quickly. You will be missed.

My sincere condolences to all who loved and cherished Jack throughout his life. I know Jack from the Tony Rose pool where we often enjoyed sharing briefly what was happening in our lives. Jack was an amazing friendly person with a twinkle in his eye and a winsome smile. He was friendly with everyone and loved to laugh. We miss his presence and mourn his passing.
