Obituary of Eldon HILLYARD
William Eldon Homer Hillyard (VA3ELD)
August 20, 1934 -October 21, 2024
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Eldon at the age of 90 at Headwaters Health Care Centre on October 21, 2024.
Eldon was the beloved husband of Norma (nee Graham) and only son of the late Margaret Hillock and Homer Hillyard.
He was the cherished brother of Melva Galbraith, Lorna Little, and Verna Hillyard. Uncle of Ruth Thompson, Stephen Galbraith, Margaret Little, Laureen Van Staalduinen, Gwen Beauchemin and the late John Galbraith. Great Uncle to eleven nieces and nephews.
He was cherished and cared for by his brother-in-law Jim Graham (Pat – deceased) and their girls Barbara (Michael) O’Meara, and Joanne Graham (Garret Gudz). He adored Sean and Neal O’Meara. All went to great lengths to ensure facilities and staffing for Eldon’s care at home for his last few months. He dearly missed his cat Charlie, whom he loved like his child.
He loved interacting with children, especially with telescopes for star gazing, simple science experiments and illusions. He had a love for WWII history and an admiration for all those who defended us. Ham radio and photography were of special interest to him.
Norma’s nieces, Joanne and Barbara adored him and introduced him to friends as “my Uncle Eldie, who never quite grew up”
After his retirement for Nortel Networks, he spent many years as a volunteer at the Habitat for Humanity Restore for Caledon Community Services.
He was saddened that so many of his boyhood friends were no longer with him but cherished his “best and long time friend” Jack Cronin.
Many thanks to the wonderful cardiac care of Dr. Paul Joza and the fantastic specialists at University Health Network. Dr. Michael Mori provided constant care with home visits near the end.
A Memorial Service for Eldon will take place at the Knox United Church (2976 Charleston Sideroad, Caledon Village, ON L7K 0V8) on Friday November 8th, 2024, at 11:00 am. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Reception to follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the University Health Network or the Lions Foundation of Canada, Dog Guides in Eldon’s memory would be greatly appreciated.
