Hello to all Mr.Shaws family & friends!! I am 47 years old and had Jim as my 4th grade teacher at Princess Elizabeth in Orangeville He was also my coach!!
He is my favourite teacher & coach of all time!! He helped make math fun for me, encouraged me to play sports knowing I had natural skills which turned out to be a love of sports for a lifetime!! He was always kind to me and made me feel special!! He was always there for me and made me smile if I was having a tough day with school or friendships!! I will be forever thankful for Mr.Shaw!! He made a difference in my life!! Rest in peace Coach!!!
Last time I ran into him as an adult I told him all of this & thanked him!!
I am truly grateful!!

Memories of Jim, his teaching days at MAPS where I first met him in 1969, his jokes, and everlasting smiles have filled this past 2 weeks with love. The mini-roast he performed of me, and of Bruce at our wedding in 1983, and knowing how he practiced to have a dance with me at our wedding where he acted as our honorary Emcee.
So many memories, even though our face to face meetings became more scarce as Life got in the way.
He may have passed but will never be forgotten, having woven himself into the fabric of so many lives in our community.
Thank you to Marion, Bob, and Jennifer for sharing your Dad with so many of us.
Rest well Jim, we'll catch up with you soon enough.

Marion and Family,
What an honour it was to have known Jim .
My first was at Mono Amaranth School when I was added to the staff in November due to an increase in school enrolments. Our daughter Cynthia spoke highly of Jim when she attended MAPS.
My next time Jim and I made contact was at Grand
Valley School. We shared some students. It was quite evident that Jim cared for his students.
After retirement it was an enjoyable time getting together with the Grand Valley Lunch Bunch teachers and spouses. Don liked to chat with Jim during those times.
We are sorry we couldn't make it to Grand Valley but we were able to follow the service on line. It was evident that he was a very important well respected person in Grand Valley.
We are making a donation to Chapman House Hospice in Owen Sound in Jim's memory.

The very best memories are of the stories Jim would tell and the way he told them! So happy and cheerful and always interested to hear your stories as well. Many family gatherings where Jim could relate to the youngest to the oldest. Sending my condolences to you Marion and all the family. Wishing you all happy memories of Jim and his infectious smile.

I always remember Jim as a gentle and kind man and a contributor to his community. The last time I saw Jim, he sat across from me at the Air Cadet Christmas Mess Dinner in December and as I remember, the topic of conversation was the Toronto Maple Leafs and Jim's favourite player who was, if I remember correctly, Mitch Marner . Jim was a nice and good man.

One day in church Jim heard my 6 year old Kaitlyn say “ I can’t see from here”. He asked her to come and sit with him. After that she sat with them most of the time. When she was 7 she ask Jim if she could come and visit the Shaw’s house. I brought her and sometimes her brothers a number of times over the year. Jim and Kaitlyn would biked, go out for lunch and especially ate ice cream, and they both liked to write and draw. He used to call her his substitute granddaughter. Jim published his first book “Joyful life” with short stories with Kaitlyn as the main character in memory of his young friend Kaitlyn that passed in 2011. Thank you Jim for being a great friend, you will be miss by your McPherson family.

Jim was a wonderful teacher who never stopped learning, a caring and vital community leader, devout church-goer, a devoted husband, father and grandfather and a lifelong friend to me, a fellow "Brooklynite." We kept in touch long after I moved to Ottawa and we reconnected at a coffee shop or at the ballpark nearly every time I made a trip home to the Valley for 35 years. He was a G.V. hockey coach, a cyclist extraordinaire, a leading Lion, a founding figure for tennis in the town (and a worthy opponent) and the head coach for various sports at the schools where he taught. He befriended and mentored countless young people, lifting up everyone around him. Jim was a skilled chronicler of the events and people of Grand Valley through his newspaper columns (later compiled in book form), another key part of the community-building role he played. Our mutual love of journalism animated our conversations and deepened our friendship. He laughed easily and cracked wise often, such a pleasure to spend time with. For all of his achievements and legacies, he was always so humble and self-deprecating. A lovely, lovely man in all respects. He did have one weakness: my Mom's butter tarts.
Condolences to Marion, Bob, Jennifer and the rest of Jim's family. I will miss him but always remember him. Looking forward to joining Friday's remembrance via Zoom.
So grateful for Jim's life,
Randy Boswell

Jim was such a kind and generous fellow. He taught me a great deal about coaching soccer but also how to make kids the focus of teaching... not the paperwork or the parents, but families and community.
