When I met Rosemary, in 1963, I was a skinny homesick kid from NYC, going through my first full summer at Rainbow Valley Ranch. I was awkward around the horses, when I had expected to be proficient. (After all, I had read Misty of Chincoteague — what else did I need to know?) But then I saw Rosemary, who was proficiency personified. She was capable and calm and kind and seemed so far above me as to be impossible to ever get to know.
Our lives intersected over the years at the camp. I became more proficient, but of course, could never catch up. Eventually, my life left horses behind, but for Rosemary, the connection to horses was profound and continued to be foremost in the way she processed the world.
Getting to know Rosemary as an adult, sharing the memories of her parents who had such a profound influence on my life, and understanding who she herself was and how she saw the world, continued to be an inspiration to me. Our years of annual celebration at The Royal filled me with joy — Rosemary was always so kind and caring. She remembered everything about me, and I always felt that she saw positive things in me that I couldn’t see in myself. I always came away feeling better about who I was, and what I was doing, after seeing Rosemary. That, I think, was her most profound gift. To make you believe in yourself. To see the best in you.
She will be deeply missed.

Whether it was as Mamie, Rosemary, or Rowdy. Aunt Rosemary was a big part of my formative years, and one that I am grateful for.
My condolences to Rachael, Denis, April, and their families.

When I first met Rosemary, she welcomed me with her warm "Hello" and after that there was no turning back. We did not meet that often but whenever we did, it was always a glorious conversation. If Rosemary could be described in one word, my word for her would be 'kindness'. We shared wonderful memories of Singapore. Her conversations will be cherished.

When I think of Rosemary I see in my mind’s eye an image of stacks of reminder notes, greeting cards, bills and pictures piled on her kitchen table - veritable snow drifts of paper. The surface had disappeared in a sea of white. If a breeze were to blow it would send them flying and reduce her life to chaos. “Where do you eat” I asked. “Oh, well….” she replied. Eventually they multiplied to the point where the stove top was covered as well but that wasn’t a problem because she didn’t use that either!
I will always remember how she embraced life; her refusal to let anything stop her from enjoying everything there was out there to see and do. There was always another trip to plan, another place to visit and explore. And always, I will remember that smile.

Rosemary and I shared rides to Library gals' luncheons, talking nonstop coming and going, laughing and making memories. I will always remember her delight in a beautiful flower, a work of art, a book. Dear to her heart were family, friendships, animals. We returned the favour. Your memory makes us smile.

Rosemary Gauvin was always Aunt Mamie to us. My fondest memory of her is from four decades ago. Aunt Mamie and
Uncle Larry showed up on the work site in Enfield, Nova Scotia during my time with Katimavik. I was delighted to see
them and we spent a fun afternoon together!
Aunt Mamie loved horses and ponies! We would snicker as it was a chore to steer her away from this topic while we had
delicious, family meals together.
She was warm , soft spoken, and had a genuine concern for others. We won't forget her sense of humour and giggle.
Aunt Mamie stayed strong through trials and remained grateful for everything, even small things. She would often say,
"I'm very lucky!" We will miss her.

Many will remember Rosemary’s warmth, kindness, humour and devotion to her family, friends and community. Our “Aunt Mamie” was a constant support throughout our lives and was an example of strength, resilience and determination. We have fond memories of autumn trail rides, family events and fun times at RVR. Our sincere condolences to Rachael, Denis, April and their families.

Rosemary was one of the most influential people in my life even though I may not have realized it as a teenager, but I have dedicated my life to horses and constantly looking back to lessons I learned from her and Rainbow Valley Ranch. I don't know if she ever knew what she brought to my life and how that shaped my world but hopefully her family takes solace in the fact that I think of her often.
