Barb and family, I was so sorry to hear about Gary. We met only the one time, but it was gratifying that he could fill in so many of the gaps in the history of my maternal grandfather's life in Burk's Falls. Peace and good health to you.

I am very sorry to learn of Mr. Cook's passing. I was a student of his at ODSS in the 1990s (same year as Deidra) and Mr. Cook was one of my most memorable teachers! I just now came across a lovely letter of recommendation he had once written for me, which is what made me think to look him up. He was funny, kind, talented and much loved by his students. My condolences to his family.

Dear Barb and family,
Sending my deepest condolences to you and your family. I was a student at Charles G. Fraser in the 60's and although I didn't have Mr. Cook as my teacher, I used to help him take care of the snake in his classroom at recess. We all thought he looked like Dr. Kildare and all the grade 5 girls had a crush on him. We had a feeling that you two were dating:). I remember he was very tall and handsome and you were petite and pretty. Although almost 55 years have passed, I still remember those amazing days at Charles G. Fraser with warm and kind teachers like Mr. Cook. May he rest in peace and know that he made a difference in this world. He is so fondly remembered. May the beautiful memories that you shared, bring you solace and peace.
Love,
Anne Shlarp McArthur

Mrs. Cook and family. I was one of the lucky people to have Mr. Cook as my Grade 6 teacher in 1966 at Charles G. Fraser School. He was an exceptional teacher, I have many fond memories of him. I always wondered what happened to him and am happy to know that he did marry you, as all of us girls suspected that you two were dating. (Barb, you went to the Felician sisters daycare with my sister Irene, by St. Stanislaus Church). My deepest condolences to you and your family.

Barb, I was so very sorry to hear about Gary's passing. My heart aches for you. Gary will certainly be missed by so many of us at Greenfield Village. I met Gary 20 years ago when he was one of my tennis instructors for beginners at Greenfield. He was so patient with us and kept us all laughing with his crazy humor. But he was also a care giver. At a beginners' practice session one day my blood sugar suddenly dropped hard, and I didn't have any snacks with me at the courts. Gary literally ran home and quickly returned with his arms loaded with all sorts of food and drink. He said, "I didn't know what you needed so I just grabbed everything I could think of." Needless to say, he saved the day, and I was so thankful for his quick action and care.

My sincere condolences to Barbara and the rest of Gary's family.
I was much saddened to learn of Gary's death. My connection to him is mostly far in his past. His father was best man at my parent's wedding, and my parents were several times guests at the Cook cottage when it was the only cottage in Birch Cove. The four parents remained good friends right to the end.
Gary was just enough older that the four youngest boys - I was was one of them - did not spend much time with him at the cottage, outside of evening games of hide and seek around the cove's parking lot. One summer day, the four young guys dressed up as Indians (it was long before such activities became socially incorrect, and properly so), and Gary volunteered to apply the necessary war paint. He did so in streaks of bright colours, but somehow, Don ended up with the inscription "Eat at Joe's" on his back instead of stripes of colour. It provoked, as Gary intended, a good laugh for all, parents included.
A few years ago, Gary learned that I did not have a picture of my parents' wedding, and generously gave me the picture of their wedding that my parents had given his father. I much appreciated what he did.
And that for me remains Gary Cook: kind, generous, and full of good humour.

Wayne and I are so very sorry for your loss of Gary, a wonderful teacher and simply a great guy.
One of my fondest memories of Mr. Cook is actually my first: with him welcoming me to ODSS at least a year before I had any classes with him. That kind gesture helped ease my transition from Barb's class in grade 8 to the strange new world of high-school. Gary's classes were fun, his humour and generosity bringing out the best in his students, including this incredibly shy introvert (back then). His praise and guidance meant the world and he'll be remembered always as one of my favourite teachers.
Our deepest sympathies,
Marla (Wynnychenko) and Wayne Robinson

Very sad news, indeed. I loved art class with Mr. Cook. I do remember him coming out of his class one day, though, without his humour ... giving us crap because a crowd had gathered around a student that was break-dancing (wow, a cool new thing for Orangeville) in the hall outside of his classroom. It didn't tarnish the respect we all had for him because he spoke the words and then went back to being the great and funny man he was. Great memories for so many students that were lucky to have Gary as a teacher.

Truly saddened to hear this news. It makes me realize how blessed and honoured I am to be able to successfully maintain a career (35+ years) in the arts as a result of the wonderful direction, encouragement and support of Glenn, Gary and Deb - the art teachers of ODSS when I roamed the halls from 79-83.
