Georgia: friend, confidante and travel companion. I first met Georgia at Keswick High School in the 2000’s where we were both teachers and divorced. Even when she went on to teach in another school, our friendship persevered by meeting every Friday with another divorced teacher, Janet, for happy hour at The Red Crest Golf Club Bistro on Highway 9. Georgia and I went on vacations together to Cuba (Holguin) and Mexico (Puerto Vallarta) as well as at cottages on Bob’s Lake (near Westport) and Sturgeon Lake (Bobcaygeon). In the times in between, we would visit at one another’s homes and there was always a glass of wine to cheer us. On these visits she would often awe us with wonderful “slide shows” of some of her other travels, notably the spring flowers found in the Keukenhof Gardens in Amsterdam at the time of the Tulip Festival while on her way to visit her sister, Jennifer in Tanzania. Her photos from the Ngorongoro Crater, the animals and safari with Jennifer made me want to pack my bags and go on the same trip.
I admired her love of family, and how she demonstrated that by organizing an annual get together with her immediate family at a cottage that she rented. She was proud of her children and grandchildren.
When she moved back to Toronto to be near her them, the visits became fewer, and ended abruptly with Covid. However during all of the last three years or so, there were always e-mails and phone calls to keep connected. We never ran out of things to talk about, whether it was gardening, politics, literature, travel or family. She not only believed in education, but she practiced it by being a “life-long learner” frequently attending lecture series even after retiring from teaching. Not only was she an English teacher, but her spoken language was eloquent and always grammatically correct. We were both Leos, astrologically speaking; perhaps that is what kept us together aside from similar interests and values. However, what I really believe is what Meghan stated in her official obituary was that “Georgia was a kind, warm and patient soul who always sought to make others feel heard, valued and respected.” I am proud to have been her friend for almost twenty years.

It is with a saddened heart I say goodbye to my dear friend and companion Georgia. She was so much a part of my life - twice a week bridge partner, an evening a week sailing at National Yacht Club, many days of lawn bowling at ELBC and more recently our weekly walk in James Gardens or by the lake near her home. Georgia was a sterling woman of great courage who loved her family, friends and life in general. She is sorely missed.

dear Georgia,
you have been a marvelous friend: sharp but never bitter, rigorous but never too stiff, and always generous with engaging conversations. You have been admirable in being coherent and true to yourself until the end: I suppose the best definition of a great teacher, let alone of a mensch.
We will miss you.

I treasure the time Georgia and I spent together in Florida, Quebec City, Sante Fe, at a cottage and on the water, in the parks of late, over a dining table, emails, calls and texts. I enjoyed her quirky sense of humour, idioms, family stories, tales of adventures both big and small and the trials and tribulations of teaching and daily life. Georgia was a gentle guiding hand in my life on many occasions and I am a better person for having known her. I always admired her commitment to making time and creating memories with family friends and her joy of simple pleasures, a walk in the park, the taste of a good baguette, a cold beer or glass of wine, the sight and sounds of birds and the comfort a furry friend can bring into our world when we need a cuddle.
I don't know if there is another side, another life, another chance to meet again but if there is I will look forward to renewing our friendship and having new reasons to laugh and smile and make new memories.
Georgia's was a life well lived. It is the best that anyone can say at this time of life. I loved her and I miss her. Kathy
