It was a pleasure to meet George. Going by the stories he was an example of how life should be lived. Such a shame that we never met earlier. I am sure my mum would have embraced the family and brother she never knew she had. The void she had felt throughout her life would certainly have been filled with the presence of George.

I didn’t have the privilege of having George in my life but was fortunate to meet him via Zoom last year. Thanks to he and I both sending our DNA off to Ancestry we found our Rafferty connection, from different corners of the globe. I am so glad we had that chance to meet and to know that our families have spread and prospered. My thoughts are with you Ellen and Caroline, and with your families. I hope you all find comfort in the many memories you all have, and I thank you for the ones you have shared in this tribute to him. I feel I know him a little better and wish I had been able to meet up with him in Anstruther (a favourite spot on my travels)!
Thinking of you all,
Alice Ciccarelli xx

I have many memories of Uncle George through the years, but here are a few:
When Billy and I were kids, he took us to a cinema in Glasgow called the George, to see a film call “the sunny side of the street” starring Frankie Lane, who was a “super star” at the time. Uncle George must have only been about 16 and full of teenage“teddy boy” stuff, but he always had time for us.
I remember, when I used to go to the “dancing” in Glasgow, I missed the last bus to East Kilbride, so I took the all-night bus to uncle Georges home in Easterhouse and WOKE UP the family!! It was a shock seeing me on the doorstep! He wasn’t annoyed with me, but gave me a lecture, and told me he would be happy for me to stay with them any Saturday night after the dancing, instead of the journey back to EK. I did this regularly!!
My memories of our first trip to Canada in 1979 was awesome. It was a great experience Uncle George and Aunt Ann did everything to make our holiday fantastic. Nothing was any trouble for him. He drove us everywhere, went roller skating, beach trips, Niagara falls, etc. The memories of that holiday, and of course many other visits, will be with me always.

Our sympathy is with the family at this time. For our family George was taken early. it had only been in the last few years that we had the pleasure to start to get to know uncle George. Normally in the past when he was over in Scotland, he would have spent time with my parents Bob and Rose or up in East Kilbride.
We had the pleasure of his company on a couple of outings, of course we visited St Andrews and being so close to Anstruther, we just had to go for the treasured fish supper. Plus, we managed to get to see him when we went down to Largs and he was able to give his expert opinion on each of the chip shops as we walked past till, we got to the best one. Of course, we had to go in and sample the best fish and chips in Largs.
It was a little more taxing for him when Anne took him over to Spain, not so many chip shops over there, but he managed to find one that met with his approval.
We were looking forward to his next visit to Scotland, unfortunately that was not to be, due to the pandemic.
You will remain in our thoughts and prayers and know that he will be there looking down and protecting the family.
Joe. Anne and Family xx

So here we are golfing at Largs. In typical George fashion we left for the course at 5 am even though it doesn’t open till 9. As usual we are first on the course. Neither of us has played well on this day. We are looking forward to having lunch at Morris’s with
Bobby. On the 17th hole I hit my shot over the green. I mutter the few Scottish words George taught ma and I stomp off to chip my ball on the green. I look up to see George lying prone under a tree. I run down in a panic wondering how am I going to explain to Caroline that I killed her father. George, are you okay I ask? Aye, I’m just having a wee rest. It’s been a long day. Have a wee rest George you have earned it.

My Mum and Dad used to tell me stories of George heading out to the Golf course at sun rise before they had put the pins in and managing to play the wee 9 hole course before the green keepers turned up for work. That left the rest of the day to go out and get a couple of fish suppers and argue about who was going to pay.
