I worked with Charlie at O.C.I and am so sorry to hear of his passing . He was always so pleasant and encouraging and concerned for the well-being of all. His gentle ways and welcoming smile will be missed. I met him a few times after he retired at the Farmers Market in Orangeville and it was always great to connect with him. Condolences to the whole family. Bless you all as you grieve your loss. Harriet

Charlie was a man I admired very much. His kindness and understanding was not just for the friends he helped through Hospice Dufferin. He was never rushed when dealing with others. A truly lovely man. Some friends of ours - the Curtis women came to town for a day or two to stay in the house they grew up in. They invited us for brunch and said we didn't need to bring anything. We didn't. We brought Charlie who had gone to school in Orangeville with them. It was the best surprise. They looked at pictures and laughed a lot.
And he was the garden guru and the person to ask.
Sincere condolences to you Marg and all the family

I am deeply saddened to hear the news of Charlie's passing. It was an absolute pleasure getting to know him during my time with Hospice Dufferin. He was deeply committed to his volunteer work there, and all of the clients he supported were fortunate to be the recipients of his compassionate care. Charlie will be deeply missed but fondly remembered. - Natalie Talma

Our family was privileged to share many happy hours in Charlie's garden when our children were all young together. Charlie spread joy with his gentle humour and genuine interest in everyone he met. His quiet and constant faith was a true witness to fellow Christians at St. Mark's Church. Over the years I have enjoyed my visits with Charlie when I had occasion to return to St. Mark's. He will be missed.
Heartfelt condolences to Margaret and all your family from my family,
Stephanie Pellow

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart.... over the weekend on our sons 16th Birthday this past Friday our family lost the monarchy of our (Hogben Family).....(Jon’s father) Charlie Hogben to a short battle with Esophageal cancer.
We have been at a loss for words....over the past few days.
Thank you to each and everyone who has messaged us all.
After reading my sister-in-law’s post ...Lisa inspired me to share as well.
As Lisa said anyone who met Charlie, instantly loved him.
Especially true to our friends and our children’s friends over the years.
When our children were young you would often see them cuddled up on there grandfathers lap...especially Ava as she was the first and only little girl born into our family.
What joy she brought to our whole family. Charlie was a wonderful Grandfather to Ty and Ava, all the precious memories they will forever hold dear to they're young souls and ours.
Our hearts are broken..
As we all know to be so true that Charlie’s gentle nature and infectious laugh drew people to him wherever he went.
He had a real love of life, of nature, of animals, of gardens, of garage sales and of his loving family.
I know we all would get a chuckle every holiday to see the treasures Charlie would find for us all which honestly brings a smile to my face, will always remind me of the laughter within us all as we opened our gifts.
He loved searching for our gifts and home treasures for us all on a Saturday morning.
He certainly loved gifting and watching our expressions as we opened them. They were truly one of a kind treasures Charlie! Just like you!
He was without a doubt an extremely selfless and extremely generous man.
As many of you know he was a long time volunteer at Hospice Dufferin (where Marg was formerly the Executive Director until her retirement) and was truly a wonderful presence to so many at the end of their life journey. We are great full and will forever be to sit with you in your room and say our last goodbyes.
We told him how much we adored and loved him, thank him for all the wonderful memories and the legacy he has left behind.
In your last words you wonder what to say to bring comfort to a man who has brought comfort to so many..
We told him we would all look after his bride and loving wife Marg! Our MuM Our children’s (Grandmother)
I felt he needed to know that we will also look after his beloved gardens at home and the cottage which he spent many years perfecting.
He made sure to tell me which flowers to smell, why he loved them.
His last words to me were to stay strong for the family.
I thank you accepting me into the Hogben Family over 20 years ago Charlie.
Our lives are forever changed now that you live in heaven, we will navigate through the next chapters without you..... but together as a family.
We will look for the signs as I know you will always be there watching over us all. (Another Angel)
Please give my mom a hug for me in heaven Charlie & remind her that not a day goes by that I don't think of her.
I too would like to thank the two wonderful paramedics who took the time to carry Charlie for one last stroll of his “miraculous” Garden of Eden.
As Lisa said ‘if only they knew how much comfort that has given to all of us who loved him so dear’
We thank them with all our hearts truly!
Thank you to the doctors and nurses for doing the best that you could.
Treating Charlie during Covid sadly left us all feeling helpless.
Charlie you and Marg truly were an inspiration to me to follow my career in the Design and Floral Industry...I never did tell you that.... thank you for your words of wisdom and supporting me over all these years. I will forever think of you every time I am in the garden.
You certainly left your wonderful mark on the world and all that knew you.
The monarchy of OUR FAMILY & Your memory will live in all of us forever.
If there’s one thing that we learn when it’s time for those we love to go to heaven is that time is of an essence and it is most precious.
Love is something you show ..you earn and you teach!
It is not something that can be bought or sold. It is priceless!
It is the most precious gift in the entire world.
Thank you for the wonderful Memories Charlie
With Love,
Jon, Marcy, Ty, Ava
My Mothers Favourite Quote
Our Family is held together by choice.....
Members are alike and un-alike...
Yet there is a Comfort in the sameness...
And an excitement in our differences....
When we RESPECT and relish Both Conditions....
We can call ourselves FAMILY....
